  Powhatan 4-H Clubs

 The Powhatan 4-H Dairy Club is a club for youth age 9* to 18.  The club meets once a month at the leader’s home on Judes Ferry Road.  They make numerous field trips to area dairy farms where they practice judging dairy cattle.  They attend a judging school at Virginia Tech. in the spring and compete at the state Jr. Dairyman’s competition held annually during the State Fair of Virginia.

 The Powhatan 4-H Cooking Club meets on the last Saturday of the month at the leaders home on Maidens Road and is open to youth ages 9* – 18.  In general, the club member makes a dish that can be served to their family that evening.  The club also goes on field trips and makes specialty dishes for parties and breakfasts for the Extension office’s ELC.  Club members are encouraged to enter their baked goods in the youth competition at the State Fair of Virginia.

 The 4-H Poultry Club meets on the second Monday of the month at the leaders home on Three Bridge Road.  This club is for children age 9* – 18.  Members do projects related to all thing poultry throughout the year, including showing their poultry at the State Fair of Virginia.

 The Powhatan 4-H Shooting Club meets twice a month from February to September. The club is open to youth ages 9* - 18.  They learn skills in riflery, shotgunning, archery and compassing.  The club often meets at the leaders home on Mill road, but sometimes has a meeting at area shooting ranges.  They sponsor a hunter safety course annually, and participate at various local, state and national shooting competitions.

 The Foalin’ Around 4-H Club is a project club for 9* - 18 year olds meeting every first sunday of the month at the leader’s home off of Judes Ferry Road. Club members learn about all aspects of caring for pregnant mares and their foals, sponsor and compete in horse shows, participate in parades, and take field trips.  You do not have to own a horse to be a club member.

 The Field of Dreams 4H Horse and Pony Club meets on the first Friday of the month at 4:30 at the Powhatan County Library.  Club members (age 9* - 18) do horse related projects, go on field trips, sponsor horse shows, and participate in parades.  You do not have to own a horse to be a club member.

 The Bits and Spurs 4-H Club meets on the third Wednesday of the month at Mesa Vista Farm (on Dorset Road).  The club is open to youth age 9* - 18.  The club participates in parades, sponsors horse shows, and does horse related projects throughout the year.  You do not have to own a horse to be a member.

 The Powhatan Riders 4-H Equestrian Club meets every second Thursday at the Powhatan extension office.  This club is open to youth ages 9* to 18.  The club participates in parades, goes on field trips, attends 4-H day at the Capitol, sponsors horse shows, and does various horse related projects throughout the year.  You do not have to own a horse to be a club member.

 The Clover Buddies 4-H Club is a club that meets monthly at the leaders home on Three Bridge road.  It is for youth ages 5* - 8 years old.  Club members have a different project that they do each month.  This year they will spend a few months interacting with some of our counties senior residents.  A Christmas dinner at a local restaurant is one event being planned.

 The green thumbs 4-H Horticulture Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 3:30 at Pocahontas Elementary school.  The club is open to youth ages 9* - 18.  They do a variety of projects that are all associated with plants.  They maintain gardens on Tilman Street and at the middle school.  Some projects planned for this year include making toad houses from clay, making floral arrangements, and going on field trips.

             

 Pet Pals Small Animals Club is a 4-H club based in Goochland.  It is open to youth from Powhatan County.  It is for youth ages 9* - 18.  The club meets in Centreville at the leader’s veterinary office.  The club currently has members working with dogs, cats, rabbits and spiders.

 *The 4-H year starts on October 1, and ends on September 30.  A youth must turn 9 during the 4-H year to be eligible for the project clubs.  A child must turn 5 during the 4-H year to be eligible for Clover Buddies Club.
