I Cum’ Bin

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a crowd of witnesses,

let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us,

and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

looking to Jesus the author of our faith…”

Hebrews 12:1-2a

Emily did not want to walk in front of me nor did she want to walk beside me. She strolled along behind me saying, “I cum’ bin”; not once, not twice, but over and over again.  As I mulled over it, I visualized Emily and her mother taking a walk with Emily lagging along behind enjoying the distractions.  I could hear her mother asking,  “Are you coming?”

In order to come to Jesus we have to follow:

  • …I remember You on my bed, I mediate on You in the night watches.  Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice, my soul follows close behind You.”  Psalms 63:6
  • “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Matthew 11:28

I was amazed at the number of times the book of Revelations beckons us on…

  • “To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on my throne…” Revelations 3:21

  • And the Spirit and the bride say, “COME!”  And let him who hears say, “Come!”  And let him who thirsts come.  Whoever desires, let him take the water freely.  Revelations 22:1

One day a scribe came to Jesus and expressed the deep desire of his heart, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever You go” (Matthew 8:19).  Jesus knew the way would be tough and that there would be many distractions along the way. He reminded the scribe that he didn’t even have a place to sleep or call home.

Following Jesus is not always easy.  When Emily is following me she can’t see ahead.  She follows where I lead her.  Even though she may get distracted with pebbles and flowers, she is safely following where the way has been made secure.

Job said, “whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another.  How my heart yearns within me!”  (Job 19:27)  The Psalmist said, “As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake in Your likeness.” Psalms 17:15

May I, like the apostle Paul, say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.”  II Timothy 4:7-8

I cum’ bin, I cum’ bin!
