Forever

Grandma, how long is forever?”  Sometimes Emily’s questions catch me off guard.  I had an instant flash back to when I was a child pondering the same question.  Emily continued, “If God is forever, how did He start?”

I tried to explain, “ Forever is forever.  No beginning or end.  It always was and always will be.”

I could see her mind spinning with the incomprehensible and she said, “Well, I just wish the Bible would tell us so I can understand.”

I said, “Well, you know Emily, the Bible does tell us. But it is also very difficult to understand.  We just have to believe it in faith.”  For now that satisfied her six-year old brain but it left me thinking.  I remember the answer to my same question many years ago, “If a bird picked up a grain of sand and flew to China and came back in 100 years and got another one until it had moved all the sand in the world, eternity would have just begun.”  My muddled mind bogs down after the first beach.  Maybe I can imagine no end, but no beginning?

For now, I see through a glass darkly, but someday I will understand when I see him face to face.  (I Corinthians 13:12).
