Equi-Spot   Equi-Spot™

Q:  What is the active ingredient in Equi-Spot?

A:  Equi-Spot contains a repellent insecticide (permethrin) to kill and repel flies, gnats, ticks and mosquitoes.

Q:  What is Permethrin's mode of action?

A:  Equi-Spot's active ingredient, permethrin, is contact insecticide, and also has contact repellent action.  Permethrin is a synthetic relative of natural pyrethrins; however, it is much more stable on your horse, more active on insects, and has relatively low toxicity to mammals.

Q:  Is Equi-Spot, with 45% permethrin, a "weaker" product than other spot-ons containing 65% permethrin?

A:  NO!  The label dose for Equi-Spot is 10 milliliters (mL).  The label dose for 65% product is 6 mL.  If you do the math (considering each product's specific gravity, both products deliver the same amount of permethrin to the horse.

6 mL/horse X 1.0976 g/mL =6.5857 grams of product X 65% = 4.3 grams/horse permethrin

10 mL/horse  X 0.9840 g/mL = 9.8400 grams of product X 45% = 4.4 grams permethrin/horse

And the higher application volume (10 mL vs. 6 mL) of Equi-Spot actually makes it easier to apply to the horse.

Q: How is Equi-Spot applied?

A:  Equi-Spot comes in convenient 10 mL unit-dose package.  Simply snap off the end of the product tube and apply:  5 mL along the back line starting at the poll (top of head behind the ears), along the base of the mane, down the dorsal midline to the dock (base of the tail); 1 mL to the top of the forehead under the forelock; 1 mL as a stripe to the back of each foreleg, from the ankle up to the knee (2 mL total); 1 mL as a stripe to the front of each hindleg, from the ankle up to the hock (2 mL total).

Q: How can a few drops of Equi-Spot spread over the horse's body and protect my horse from flies?

A: Equi-Spot is a concentrated formula. It contains 45% active ingredient, rather than a lot of water or other carrier(s) as fly sprays. Equi-Spot moves through the natural oily coating of your horses's coat and skin surface by several processes, including diffusion, capillary action, and transfer from hair to hair as your horse moves.

Q: How efficacious is Equi-Spot? How long will it last ?

A: Equi-Spot kills and repels flies, gnats, ticks, mosquitoes. Efficacy trials show that Equi-Spot spreads quickly through the horse's coat. You may see some fly reduction a few hours after application; however, it usually takes at least 24 hours for the product to completely spread and give maximum effect. Equi-Spot can be reapplied every 14 days. (2 weeks).

Q: Is Equi-Spot a potential hazard to horses?

A: Nearly all horses tolerate Equi-Spot well. But, as with any fly control product, drug, or food individual horses may be sensitive to one or more of the ingredients. If your horse show signs of irritation or sensitivity to the product (redness or itchiness at the application site), discontinued use and bathe the horse with a mild, non-insecticidal shampoo; seek veterinary advice.

Q: Can Equi-Spot be used at the same time as other fly control product?

A: Adequate testing has not been done to characterize how Equi-Spot will interact with other products used on the horse at the same time. Permethrin spray should be compatible, but un general we do not recommend the combination of more than one product on the horse at one time. As with all on-animal insecticides, it is advisable to consult a veterinarian before using this product with any other pesticides or drug.

Q: What if my horse sweats or gets wet in the rain?

A: The ingredients in Equi-Spot are not soluble in water, so water has a minimal effect. Equi-Spot remains in the natural, water-repelling oily layer of your horse's coat and skin surface.

Q: Should my horse be clean before before I apply Equi-Spot?

A: You don't have to shampoo your horse before using Equi-Spot. However, because shampooing will remove some of Equi-Spot's active ingredient, washing your horse before treatment is preferable to doing it soon after treatment.

Q: Will shampooing my horse have any effect on Equi-Spot?

A: Soaps wash away part of the natural oils on your horse's coat and skin, and will also remove some of the Equi-Spot, reducing efficacy.

Q: How often should I use Equi-Spot?

A: As the label says, Equi-Spot can be applied once every 14 days.

Q: Are there different application rates of Equi-Spot for different size horses ?

A: NO. The 10 mL dose is labeled to treat all sizes of horses. The only use restriction is that Equi-Spot cannot be applied to foals less than 12 weeks old.

Q: Can I use Equi-Spot year-around?

A: Yes. Equi-Spot may be used anytime of the year that your horse needs protection from flies, gnats, ticks, or misquitoes.

Q: Will Equi-Spot take care of all my fly problems?

A: As with all fly control products, Equi-Spot should be used as a part of a program aimed at reducing fly populations in your horse's environment. Treat the barn, stalls and surface areas with residual fly control product to further reduce the chance of fly re-infestation. Always keep the horse's environment clean, because sanitation is a big part of fly control. See your retailer for program recommendations.
