Denbigh Follow-up Pictures

November 20, 2004

Today as we viewed the damage it was seemed worst than the night of the fire.  When we saw the blacken, charred floor joist and studs we realized how CLOSE they came to losing the whole house.  The fire was up in the walls and the fireman got it out without it going through the roof!  The soot and smoke damage in the whole house is overwhelming.  Every inch will need to be scrubbed and painted. I don't know how you tackle such a project.

Again we were amazed at what suffered heat, fire damage and what escaped.  The antique pump organ in the living room is not even scorched and yet curtains in the dining room were dripping of the curtain rods.

The city has condemned the electric on the whole farm. So not only do they have the house to fix, they have to redo the electric in all the barns.  They have a big task ahead of them.  Grandpa was in good spirits.  He is strong at heart and determined in spirit.

Gene looking at damage.

It is absolutely amazing the whole house was not gutted.

Looking out front door.  The damage is overwhelming . The culprit-- blown panel boxes from the basement
When they were tearing away fire damage,  they uncovered the back of this piece of sheetrock that had a child's drawing with  "Gene Ryan Hertzler-age 2, 1952"  written on it.  Obviously a 2 year old is not this advanced in drawing so someone had to help him. It is speculated that it was his older sister, Judy, who was probably entertaining him.
